Adult Education Programs

In accordance with our mission, AFAB-KAFANM's Adult Education and Training programs provide individuals the fundamental skills necessary to secure gainful employment and better integrate themselves into society. Through developing language and computer skills, as well as economic proficiency, participants gain tools they can use to change their lives in positive ways.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes

Students in AFAB's ESOL classes develop their English language skills to more effectively function in everyday situations they encounter outside the classroom. The focus of the curriculum is the development of all four areas of language proficiency: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students are encouraged to participate in curriculum content and development. Students are placed in one of 4 levels (ESOL Literacy, ESOL 1, 2, or 3) according to their results on a placement test given at the beginning of the session.

ESOL Courses

Morning ESOL (MESOL-all levels):
Tuesdays & Thursdays;
9:00-12:00 AM

Night ESOL (NESOL-all levels):
Tuesdays & Thursdays;

Literacy Classes (English and Haitian Creole)

Literacy in one's own language facilitates the learning of a second language. For this reason, AFAB requires students who do not know how to read or write to enroll in the native language literacy class before registering for ESOL courses. In the literacy class, students develop their reading and writing skills in Haitian Creole, to attain proficiency in all aspects of the language. Students also work to develop skills and knowledge in other areas that will help them on their path towards self-sufficiency and independence in their daily lives.
