Action Alert and Update: DREAM Act Needs Your Help!

Date: October 23, 2007

Action: Urge Your Senators to Support the DREAM Act In an update from last month, we noted that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made a commitment to bring the DREAM Act to the Senate floor for a vote. The DREAM Act is going to be considered on the Senate the floor this week. It will undoubtedly be subject to filibuster by immigration restrictionists in the Senate. The first hurdle will be on a motion to proceed. That motion will probably be filibustered, and 60 votes will be needed to end the filibuster. That vote will most likely take place Wednesday (10/24) late in the morning. If the DREAM Act gets past that hurdle, it will need 60 votes again on a cloture motion to end the expected filibuster on the bill itself. Call your Senators and urge them to support the DREAM Act.

Contact Information: If you don't already have your Senators' numbers programmed into your phones, you can quickly find the phone numbers for your Senators here.

You can also go to AILA's call alert page and type in your zip code, if you need to find your Senator.

What to Say: You will most likely be leaving a message with the person who answers the phones for the Senator. They will be getting plenty of calls; you simply need to register your position. "The Senator should vote FOR the motion to proceed on the DREAM Act offered by Senators Durbin, Hagel, and Lugar."

Please keep trying: Many calls will be coming in, it may take you a while to get through.

If you can do more:

Send an e-mail. You can send a pre-written comment from this page.

Send a letter to your local newspaper. Here is a sample (pdf). Cut and paste this alert into an alert to your networks.

Arm yourself with facts. Anti-immigrant groups make their case using extreme examples and distortion. Use this handy two-page fact sheet created by the Immigration Policy Center. Anti-immigrant groups have already begun to rev up their networks. The Senate must hear from us!
